string translation

Postby Aury88 » Sun Sep 24, 2017 6:43 am

:?: Hi guys.

I've some doubt about the translation of strange strings like:
  • C_reate...
  • _Socks Host
  • _FTP Proxy
  • T_ime
  • S_econds
  • _Configuration URL
  • .......
in italian many of them are translatable like
  • Time => Orario
  • Seconds => Secondi
or should be in a reversed order like
  • FTP Proxy => Proxy FTP
  • Configuration URL => URL di Configurazione
So what I've to do with those underscores in the string? do I leave the whole string untranslated ?
Also some time I find a unity or unity8 string...have I to "translate" them in Yunit?
thank you

I believe that the underscore represents the keyboard shortcut to activate the item (maybe a menu item, button etc). Eg "C_reate..." should mean ALT+R activates this item.
If you give me a specific example (string and the package that it appears) I could verify that this is the case.

for example the translatable string

_Input volume:

in
Occurrences
../panels/sound/gvc-mixer-dialog.c:2042
Resource
unity-control-center
(string number 783 in the unity-control-center)

or the string

_Alert volume:

in
Occurrences
../panels/sound/gvc-mixer-dialog.c:2103
Resource
unity-control-center
(string number 786 in the unity-control-center)

Yeap. These underscores are mnemonics and indicate that the next character after the underscore is used for keyboard navigation.

TBH I'm not sure if all these messages in unity-control-center package appear somewhere in the interface of yunit/unity8 :\

I think probably they appear in the menus options
btw if I translate them have I to put the underscore before the same letter? some time this is not possible because the translation have not that letter
for example

_Open
is translated by
Apri
so there is no o letter in italian

No, you can use any letter you like. However, from a usability perspective, I would advise you to use the same letter whenever possible and/or keep consistent letters for menu items that are common in different applications (ie file, open, close, exit, edit, copy, paste etc). We wouldn't want users that come from another Desktop Environment to have to learn these again. Right? ;)

naturally I 'll try to use the same letter used in the English version when possible. the problem is only in a couple of strings that can't be translated in a way containing that underscored letter :?
I think that the the methodology used on unit7 is the most ideal
